BASICS
I had an epiphany during the “Year of the Rooster” Chinese New Year in 2017. It all came down to the fact that some of my pupils asked each other what their Zodiac Animal was. They would state what animal they were as if they really were that animal. Thus, they would say things like “I am a rabbit” and “I am a dragon.” At this point, I took a step back and asked myself, “Why am I doing these kinds of Tolkien-style races that have been done countless times, like dwarves, humans, elves, and orcs?” Why not base your race on your Chinese zodiac animal?
Concept Development
Starting with the 12 zodiac animals, I researched the zodiac in Chinese culture. I soon discovered that the zodiac animals were divided into four groups, and I viewed this as a chance to create four unique factions. You can’t play any other official zodiac animal than your own in my system; you are what you are. I created a fourth race in each faction; these are neutral races to let individuals choose to play in other factions. Additionally, players can choose from four void races in an end-game unlocked faction.
Art Style
I intended to use cartoons from the 1980s and early 1990s as inspiration for my artwork. such as Bucky O’Hare, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Thunder Cats, and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
BEAWARE: These are just basic first attempt sketch ideas; I have not done much shading or adding details. Even the items and clothing are not set in stone.
